Bradwell Abbey Fibre Trial

Milton Keynes has been chosen as one of two sites set to trial ultra-fast broadband. Bradwell Abbey telephone exchange, situated centrally in Milton Keynes, will be fitted with BT test equipment in 2010 allowing a large section of the city to benefit from broadband speeds up to 100 times faster than those currently available.

Despite being a new city and positioning itself as a technological and commercial hub, Milton Keynes has always suffered from poor broadband connectivity. Much of the problem can be attributed to aluminium cabling being used for the telephone network in Milton Keynes and the main telephone lines being laid along the city's famous grid road system making line length from the city's telephone exchanges longer than necessary. For many Milton Keynes residents broadband connectivity has been slow or non-existent.

In recent years broadband connectivity in Milton Keynes has improved significantly. Due partly to good work from the Milton Keynes Broadband Action Group, BT and other ISP's broadband connectivity is possible for most residents in the Milton Keynes area. Bradwell Abbey exchange will be fitted with FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) technology, meaning it will potentially be able to deliver 100Mb/s download speeds. FTTP means that a fibre optic connection directly from building to exchange is employed for all connectivity, bypassing the existing telephone network altogether. Also due for activation is a FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) service offering download speeds up to 40Mbps.

With the introduction of the Bradwell Abbey trial Milton Keynes is well placed to continue developing itself as one of the UK's commercial centres, attracting business and investment into the area due to its central location and outstanding connectivity.
